Network Card

The network card, network adapter or network interface controller (NIC) is a device usually placed inside the computer but it is possible to get an external version. It has been designed to allow computers to communicate over a virtual computer network.

It contains a circuit board, that connects to the bus of both user machines and servers in a local area network. The adapters are wired to a network hub or router, generally through twisted wire pair cables. For a single home computer, the network adapter is often connected directly into the modem, but for a homes with more then one computer, the network adapter is usually connected to a router or hub.
